The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday January 31, rejected riding in two armoured jeeps during his campaign in Bauchi State.
According to Daily Trust report, Buhari and his campaign train landed at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi at about 5:30 pm to a mammoth crowd which had waited since morning.
The Bauchi State Government House officials were said to have stationed the two bullet-proof vehicles at the airport, waiting for Buhari’s arrival from Ilorin, Kwara State capital.
Instead of riding in the provided armoured vehicles, he chose to ride in an armoured Coaster bus provided by the APC presidential campaign office.
It was gathered that he rejected the two armoured vehicles because a bus with open roof was provided by his campaign organisation.
This action reportedly angered the state protocol officials who didn’t hide their displeasure.
Buhari’s team had arrived in four chartered planes. The fourth one arrived a little late, just as Buhari’s motorcade was leaving the airport.
When some delegates aboard the plane approached the two armoured vehicles which were at the rear of the convoy, the angry protocol officials refused to allow them board it.
The protocol officials reportedly ignored explanations by the delegation.
One of them said in anger, “The jeeps are armoured cars brought here by the governor for Buhari’s use. But he refused to use them.”
The delegates had to find an alternative means of getting to the rally venue.
While addressing the crowd at the Ibrahim Babangida Trade Fair Complex, venue of his presidential campaign, Buhari, who spoke for less than ten minutes said it was a shame that Nigerian soldiers were running away from the war front, leaving their arms for the terrorists.
Recall that the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP presidential campaign rally in Bauchi state had been chaotic as angry youths stoned dignitaries with hammer, stones and slippers.
